Occurence: In the month of Purattasi

This is the 10^th day of the Navarathiri festival. Vijayadasami means the day of victory. It is on this day that Goddess Parvathi as Durga secured a victory over the forces of ignorance symbolically potrayed as the Mahishasura-a buffalo headed demo.

The day is a very auspicious day for education, so children of 4-5 years are officially sent to school in India for study of the alphabets. But we in Malaysia go to the temples nearby where the priest helps the child to write the first alphabet in Tamil on the paddy spread on a small tray.
